Government Sector jobs hold a very important place in India. All the public sector banks conduct a common entrance exam for their clerical and probationary officers positions.
PSU banks account for a major share in the Indian banking sector. Earlier, candidates had to write multiple exams conducted by each bank for their vacancies. But from 2012, most banks use IBPS exams for their recruitment. There are separate tests for Probationary Officers, Specialist officers and Clerks. IBPS also conducts recruitment tests for the Regional Rural banks (RRB). The selection typically happens in 3 stages: prelims, mains and interview. The IBPS PO prelim has 3 sections: English, Math and Reasoning. In the prelims you have to answer 100 questions in a one hour online test. The Mains paper lasts 3 hours and has additional sections on Data Interpretation, Banking GK and writing. India’s largest bank, SBI, is not part of the IBPS system and conducts its own recruitment tests. India’s central bank, the Reserve bank of India (RBI), also conducts its own tests. The format of the SBI and RBI recruitment tests are similar to IBPS’ tests.
The Staff Selection Commission conducts exams for recruitment to Group B, C and D posts in central government departments like Income tax, Excise/GST, CBI and Enforcement Directorate. The first two parts of the recruitment process are online prelims and mains. In these two parts English, Math, reasoning and GK are tested. The Mains exam has an additional section on Statistics. The next two parts test your writing ability and basic computer proficiency. Some of the Indian Railways recruitment is also done through SSC exams.
