A lot of students wish to pursue their studies abroad, few wish to venture out after class 12th & few wish to go for Masters post their graduation.

SAT/ ACT

Getting into top Indian schools is tough. The selection ratio for the top IITs is typically less than 1%. In contrast, there are many US schools, ranked above the IITS, which have selection ratios which are more favourable to Indian students. US schools also have a wider choice of interdisciplinary courses even in the engineering stream. You could take a few courses in medical school as part of your engineering program. You also are flexible to change your majors much later into the program.

The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is conducted by the College Board. The test has two sections - Math and Verbal. Percentile scores are converted to a scale of 400 to 1600. Apart from SAT scores, US schools look at your 10th and 11th grade scores. (In most cases, you get your admission before you appear for the 12th boards.) Another input that schools use for admission decisions is your essays and recommendations given by your teachers. What also matters is your extracurricular activities, especially social work.

The American College Test (ACT) is as popular as the SAT. Although you can appear for both the exams, you need to focus on one, as the structures of the two exams are different. The ACT test covers four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. Each of these sections is graded on a scale of 1-36, and the overall score is an average of all 4 sections. If you are better at science than in English, the ACT is the test you should prefer.

GMAT

The Graduate Management Aptitude Test is used by most US business schools for admission to their MBA programs. Apart from English and Math, there are sections like Integrated Reasoning (IR) and Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). AWA measures your ability to think critically and communicate your thoughts. IR analyses your ability to interpret information to develop key insights. Scores are reported on a scale of 200-800. Most students in India appear for the GMAT to apply for the Indian School of Business (ISB). The executive MBA programs of most IIMs also accept the GMAT.

GRE

The Graduate Record Exam is used for admissions to MS programs at US universities. Of late, a lot of B schools accept GRE instead of GMAT. The GRE tests you on English and Math. In addition, there is a writing section that consists of Analysis of Issue and Analysis of Argument. Scores are reported on a scale of 260 to 340. Grad schools will look at your essays, recommendations and academics along with your GRE scores. Research done in your undergraduation will bolster your chances of getting into good schools.
